Merry Christmas!

Well my oldest is home from her first semester at college, greenhouses look good, chickens are wicked happy, firewood is dry and no market for a few weeks. Nice time to take a break, enjoy family and friends while doing a bit of cooking. A big end of year thank you to my customers.
Still waiting for the first real snow storm and the chance to use the 6 foot snowblower I purchased. This is a big deal after walking behind a 2 foot snowblower for the last 6 years trying to keep the sides of the greenhouses clear. Signed up for a few conferences and even have the good fortune of a passenger/friend to go to the conferences with who has been farming for 30 years. Then NOFA has asked me to give a seminar on greenhouse production. It's one of those times where everything seems to be coming together and to form a nice balance of work and quality time. Best wishes into the New Year everyone!

Nice weather is over. Winter is actually going to arrive this week. Still a few things to do outside but not much that can't wait until spring. Need to get planning done for next year but just can't seem to find the time. So much for the "slow season". Plenty of interesting conferences this winter just not sure if I will have the time. I am to give a presentation at NOFA in Feb. on my greenhouses. That should be fun and interesting. Winter schedule works out well this year with a 3 week break from the market that goes from Dec. 19th to Jan. 7th. Trying to decide weather or not I will continue the CSA next year. Customers have been great and it's always fun to be able to talk to everyone. I am considering things from a business perspective as well as a sanity perspective. The sanity part comes from also doing the summer market every Saturday and family life is suffering for it. I will keep everyone posted as to what I decide. On another sanity note I am already getting a lot of great candidates for farm help for next season. It's going to be a tough decision especially since once I bring someone in I am very reluctant to change my mind. I will post again soon. Need to get my website updated as well.

Turned 47 today. Ouch! Snow wind and rain. Greenhouses look good just need more of them to meet demand. I will see if I can get a couple more bought this week. Farmer's market this Saturday Dec. 18th. Then no winter market until January 8th. That's a 3 week break for veggies.
Talk you soon joe

Farmer is going into surgery tomorrow for a minor tune up. Talk to you in a few days.

Monday, November 8, 2010

Good Morning, Soup season is upon us. Great soup being served at Red Hen Bakery made my the head farmer/chef around here. A bit of sleet and rain forecast for today, need to harvest 150lbs of greens today for delivery tomorrow. Ouch. Most of it is outside under remay. Trying to stay out of the greenhouses for a few more weeks. We will see how that works out. Thanksgiving market is looming and a great deal of work to get ready for that.
talk to you soon--joe

Saturday, October 30, 2010

Well......snow,rain, sleet, whatever today. A very warm welcome to all you brave regular shoppers who came out to the last outdoor market of this season. The support was very much appreciated. Soup sold well and we are gearing up for the Thanksgiving and winter markets after taking a short 3 week break. Farm is doing well, life is damn hectic on a number of levels and things are taking way too long to get done around here on the same number of levels. Trying to find a restaurant space in Montpelier but not having much luck. Any of you readers have an idea? It would be most welcome. The soup business is doing well but has hit a wall as far as facility and space goes. I just can't produce enough Thai Green Curry Coconut Roasted Squash soup with my current setup. That and it would be really fun to have be in a kitchen cooking again. The search continues.......... So wood pile is calling my name and the snow is coming. Hopefully not for another 2-3 weeks though. Winter salad and spinach look real good and I should have plenty for the winter markets. Thinking about bagging up soup crostinis also. Half a cow in the freezer for making soup this winter. Plenty of chicken and a nice collection of winter squash. All in all a very good summer growing season. Well talk to y'all soon.

The last day of summer.........

Well the 22nd of Sept. was the last day of summer and the 23rd was the last pickup from my CSA this season. A warm sincere thank you to all my CSA members this year. What a great bunch of people. Nice getting to know you and I very much enjoyed the conversation each week.
The farm is winding down from summer and trying to get geared up for my winter season. Chickens are molting and the feathers are everywhere. Soup is being made, and outside beds tilled under and cover cropped. Overall a very solid summer season. Late plantings are in and under remay in high hopes that they will be ready for Thanksgiving into December. Tomatoes are almost all gone. A few more to tear out over the next week as well as the last of the basil. "Sugar Spinach" is being planted with even more being put in outdoors and all of one of my greenhouses will be devoted to it. Hope to see you at market this weekend.

Tuesday, September 14, 2010

Good Morning Farm Fans,
Winding down one set of seasons and gearing up for the next round. Winter planting is going. Need to get quite a few more flats started for the greenhouses. This is the nerve wracking time of year where I have to gamble on what fall weather is going to be like. To warm too long causes bolting and things to come in too early. If we have a cloudy wet cool October then things are slow and late to come in. Ah the fun of it all. Well forgot to vent the greenhouses on last Saturday and cooked alot of the tomatoes. Time to tear them out anyhow. Going to keep a few late ones in just to stretch them out and get a few more BLT's in before winter. Time to break out the remay and get after things. Hope to see you at market this weekend. Thanks Joe

Monday, September 6, 2010

Hello out there. Well things are in a weird spot. Lot's to do, too much actually. Late blight in the canning tomatoes as well. Greenhouses are cranking and things are getting ploughed under and reseeded with fall/winter lettuce and spinach. Trying to process like crazy and get things put by to make soup with and just to eat this winter. Did 50 chickens yesterday plan on doing about 100 more about mid-october, mostly old stewing hens. Supposed to have a crop mob out here on Oct. 10th. I will keep you posted on that one. Lot's of planting and tidying on that day with the extra helping hands. I will be providing lunch. Not sure if it's going to be soup, salad, and bread or just what. It will be tasty though.
Summer market continues to stump me this year. Invisible?,down economy, great home gardening season and not enough wierd stuff?, Ah well really looking forward to winter this year.
Talk to ya soon, Joe

Friday, August 13, 2010

Good Morning from the top of the ridge! Dense fog and cool temperatures this morning. Here comes all those late season diseases. Finding all kinds of stuff out in the field but so far no late blight. Keep hearing about being in different gardens here and there. I just need a couple more weeks to get all my canning tomatoes in. Must.....make......spaghetti sauce.........
Pesto making is going ahead full steam and the winter squash crop looks pretty good. Thinking a bigger focus on spinach and salad next year. Tough summer this year to grow both due to the heat. Really need to get after repairs and building things. Lot's of odd ball projects that need to get done but little time. Hope to see everyone at market tomorrow. Lot's of great veggies and plenty of chilled tomato gazpacho.
Joe

Monday, July 26, 2010

Here you go. I'm the guy in the straw hat...... http://www.montpelierbridge.com/

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

A we bit foggy up here this morning. Lot's of produce coming in. Time to do some marketing and get stuff processed for the winter soup business. Could use a couple of dry days in a row just to get at the weeds and insects. All in all things are doing well. Thrips in the basil are the new challenge. At least I know what is in there now. Plenty of deliveries today, lots of cherry tomatoes, cukes, zukes.

Saturday, July 17, 2010

To market, to market with a fat hen....... another fine summer day on tap. Heat has been great for everything except the lettuce. Although the deer and flea beetles have played a small part in it's demise as well. Should be a good market today. I have chanterelle mushrooms, japanese eggplant, okra, new potatoes, chilled cucumber soup, fresh pesto, broccoli, cabbage and few more things. Hopefully I will be a bit less invisible today. People still don't "see" me or the stand, a real marketing challenge that needs to be fixed. I will drop the crew off at market and then come back to try and do battle with the insects. They are having a marvelous year also. All kinds of new trouble makers on the farm this year. Oh Cherry tomatoes are in! I have a mixed pint with 8 different types. A few are a real surprise since they are not the tomato planted. Some rogue seed.
See you all there. Joe

Saturday, July 10, 2010

Hey Folks....what a summer so far. A real one! So just harvested 6lbs of black currants. This means I get to make about 2 gallons of creme de cassis. My favorite liquer. Market was good today and the rain cooperated by holding off until setup and then stopped for the second half of market. Crops are coming in real well. Cherry tomatoes (8 kinds) are in, broccoli, 2lb cabbages, summer squash (3 kinds), Ratt fingerling potatoes, eggplant, okra, peppers, what a great season so far. Now if the chickens would just start laying eggs again. They are, but production is very low. Seems I am going to get after the soup business in a more serious manner. USDA gave me a bit of money to set up a commercial kitchen somewhere. Who knows maybe it's time to get back into the restaurant business again................

Sunday, June 27, 2010

Well good morning, Listening to the Golden Turnip Hour on WGDR this morning. Where has June gone? July presents the hope that it will continue to be nice and warm and dry. All in all vegetables are looking really good. A little behind schedule but that is due more to my being disorganized and very distracted with other goings on. Insects are causing the bulk of the problems. Cucumber beetles and 2 types of chafer beetle----Asiatic and Rose to be exact. The Asiatic are real stinkers because the live just under the soil surface and come out at night to feed on just about anything but prefer my eggplant and peppers. cucumbers are looking to be in a bit of trouble with Anthracnose on some and then I believe Angular Leaf Spot ripping through my Japanese hierloom cucumbers. Which taste great by the way. Very long slender cuke with very little center. They have been tasting sweet for a cucumber. So far the tomatoes are looking awesome. Plenty of fruit and real healthy happy looking plants. Need to get my field tomato all staked. Am buying another greenhouse this year also. Small one, for use as a heated potting shed. The inefficiency with my current seed starting set up is just killing me. The deer continue to be pleasantly absent so far. So let's see what else is up around here...........
My farm help this year continue to do a great job and really keep the place looking great. Really need to get after weeding this week in the pathways before they get too big. Really wishing the summer squash would come in. They are close, need to put some drainage in the beds between the two greenhouses. Still way too wet in there.
Nice being at market and getting a chance to talk to everyone. Lot's of fun greens so far this season in particular the Senposai. A neat hybrid between cabbage and mustard greens. Great for stir fry or raw in a salad. Looks kind of like a collard green but much more tender with a nice flavor to it.
So off to do paperwork.....the critically dull side of farming.

Friday, June 4, 2010

Good Morning, Been way too long since I wrote something so I thought I would get you all up to date. What a growing season so far! Things are going great guns. Big push to get the final summer crops into the ground. Been waiting on a new piece of equipment to arrive to finish that job. Boy was it worth the wait. It shapes the outdoor beds, lays the plastic and drip tape all in one pass. Real slick. Cucumbers coming in, tomatoes look great. Basil is filling out real well. Potatoes are all hilled in. CSA had it's second pick up last night. Real nice bunch of people and things are going well. Cucumber beetles are in everything this year. Well Gotta go. Market tomorrow in Montpelier 9-1PM

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Sun is up...flea beetles are in everything, tomatoes look good, time to get stuff out in the field. Nice warm weather and finally caught the last 2 renegade pullets. They had gone ferral and were living like outlaws in the woods for the last 2 weeks. Time to get the electric fence turned on and deter the deer. Tempted to plant beans a bit early.

Monday, May 10, 2010

Let's see.....a few notes......CSA starts on May 27th. Market was good this weekend, a wee bit cold and soggy but good. The daughters did a fine job flying semi-solo at it. Need to get them organized a bit more. Snow all day yesterday on Mother's day...sheesh! Remay all over the place still. Big push to get greenhouses finished this week, as in prepping and planting the rest of the summer crops. Cool and damp the rest of this week, asparagus has really slowed down quite a bit.
Even going to cover the spinach back up for the rest of the week.

Saturday, May 8, 2010

Good Morning! Hope to see all of you at market today. I am beginning to think I was invisible last week given the number of you that told me you could not find me at market. Trying to figure that one out. Just in case I am on the right side of the market about 3/4's of the way down. I will have asparagus this morning in limited amounts. Also plenty of salad, spinach, baby turnips and radishes. The soups should be real good for a day like today............
Cream of Mushroom with Asparagus. These are my mushrooms. They grow in one of my greenhouses.
Chicken and Rice soup. Plenty of roasted chicken and I am using brown rice. Just a touch of white wine.
Well gotta get them going.

Wednesday, May 5, 2010

Excellant weather. Hope everyone is doing well. Snow this weekend? Again? Good soup weather but please........ First market was great. Glad to see all of you. Trying to figure out how to make myself a bit more visible. Planting is going on here and there. Trying o show some restraint since last frost date is a month away still. Windbreak is planted, soups are being made, way too many eggs. Here is one for you. Did you know fleas love chickens? Made the mistake of walking into the winter "coop" and setting up seeding flats. Spent the whole day getting eaten by fleas. My legs are itchy and not looking pretty right now. No shorts for me yet............. Hey any summer soup requests from you out there? Thinking Gazpacho, Cucumber Dill Yogurt, Vichysoise, lighter brothy stuff. Here is some shameless self-promotion and marketing. You can eat my salad and spinach at almost every restaurant in Montpelier. Ask for my salad at Uncommon Market. Asparagus is in and man is it good!! Grilled with olive oil then slathered with good horseradish, lemon and butter, bit of salt. Eating way too much of it.

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Good Morning!, Finally raining. Snow on the way this afternoon. Chickens are on their summer pasture and the ravens are picking off eggs already. A little nasty weather the next few days and looking like a great weekend on tap. First day of the summer market and they are forecasting 75 and sunny. Myself and the help will be planting cucumbers, basil and tomatoes today. Hopefully a bit of office time in the next few days as well. Need to move the new peeps next and some more roosts built.

Monday, April 26, 2010

Rain? Could really use a bit. Perhaps some snow this week. Should be an interesting weather week. Trying to get the greenhouses set for the summer still. Salad looks good, early salad in the field is looking very thirsty right now. Just not ready to irrigate yet. Chickens continue to be a pain in the neck. Coop is almost finished. Need to get meat birds ordered. First summer market is this Saturday. Really hoping to have radishes, scallions, leeks, chives, eggs, salad, and spinach. Hope it's enough. Soup too. Have I mentioned that cub cadet makes an incredibly crappy lawn mower? Well they do. Took it our for the first mow of the season and it promptly stripped a blade and spindle. I replaced all of them twice last summer.......... Well gotta go. I made the mistake of taking a nap yesterday instead of watering all my flats in the greenhouse. Ouch. I think they will be fine but I surely inflicted stress on them.

Friday, April 16, 2010

Hey Two posts in one day. Thank God for the snow, sleet, rain, hail and wind today!!!!! I finally had time to slow down and work with a new employee and above all else think. Nice to have someone come up to try out and actually work with a sense of urgency. He actually ran in the greenhouse to get his t-shirt so we could go outside and get some stuff done. Basically he was keeping up with me. Making some real good beef chili for market tomorrow right now and have to bag salad still. Hmmmm bag salad...drink red wine...stoke the fire in the fireplace.......get er done.
Oh....Coconut Green Curry Root Veg soup tomorrow also. They are calling for another 1-3 inches of slushy stuff in the next 24 hours so some good hardy soups are in order. Peeps have been evicted from the greenhouse and are living in the "bachelorette pad". Two of them have taken up residence in the garage on the office stairs and two more are currently living under the front porch. The garage pair have been promoted director of HR and VP of HR while the two under the porch merit some title but I have not figured that out yet. I am still the lowly farmer. I just can't seem to wrangle a promotion out of the chickens..........
Well....Last "winter" farmer's market is tomorrow. VC gym from 10-2pm. Fitting that we will have snow this weekend. I have about an inch of it this morning. It's nice since it forces me to slow down and focus on the greenhouses. It's way too early for this warm weather. The asparagus is going to be very confused, come up early and then get frost and die back. the chickens are very confused with the white stuff. So what else is going on........ CSA has only 2 shares left to sell and we are full. A fair amount of the early early outdoor plantings have germinated and popped up through the soil. Weeds are getting an early start also. Saw my first tarnished plant bug of the season the other day. Killed the little bugger too. Nematodes have been added to the greenhouse soil in high hopes of controlling chafer beetles this year. Aphids are having a population explosion in the spinach. Turned loose the green lacewing larva. Hopefully they will get a handle on them before the summer stuff goes in. Quite a bit of carpentry needs to get done at some point around here. Definately need a heated potting shed. The use of the basement has reached capacity and then some. This will be the last year I am down there I hope. Deer pressure is going to be huge issue this year. Shooting will finally have to start. Much to the neighbors chagrin. Gotta go.

Saturday, April 10, 2010

Well there you have it. Snow this morning, not much, but..... Supposed to be good fertilizer because it's melting and does something with ion exchange in the soil. Also makes me realize I am not as far behind as I think. Still quite a bit to get done this month. In May things will go full tilt for the summer.

Wednesday, April 7, 2010

70 degrees and thunderstorms in April? Ah well something like this happened last spring. We had a real hard frost on June 6th. Ouch. Still I have started planting some things outside early and under remay. Need to get the chickens penned on thier summer pasture. They are into everything the little stinkers. Worse than a board of directors. Soup keeps humming right along and ingredients are starting to come available again. New tractor is great. The real problem is how do I lose my winter hibernation fat sitting behind the steering wheel? Last winter market on April 17th and if things hold out we will be on the VC green. Gotta go pick up some kids.

Monday, March 29, 2010

March is coming to a close. Allot of rain on tap the next 24 hours or so. Hmmm. Need to go order up my tractor today. Flats need to be seeded. Soup? Not sure what's up there, need to get some packaged and in the freezer. Make another 10 gallons or so. Saying 70 degrees this weekend. That should get the asparagus moving. Need to get the temporary cold frames set up. Construction starts this morning. We get to spend lot's of money to have another chimney put in. I'll have to tell you sometime about shyster insurance salesman. New peeps are ready to go out on pasture.
Oh yeah it's Monday morning....ugh. Ah well gotta go do something......

Saturday, March 27, 2010

Good Morning,
A frosty 11 degrees here this morning. I am off to check the greenhouses shortly. Curious to see how everything survives and what the temps are in there. Soil temp has been sitting at 70 during the day and holding moisture well. Thermal mass in the raised beds should be good making a decent heat sink. A fair amount of over wintered Sorrel, chard, and spinach. A bit of kale also. It seems to have survived well with a remay blanket under snow. Should be ready to harvest around mid-april. Early March heat has caused a lot of early bolting in over wintered japanese brassicas. New peeps are fully feathered out and looking good at 2 months. Time to finish the chicken coop and get the big girls out on pasture for the summer. I want to seed the area with clover first though.

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

So much for summer...fall has managed to come early this year...just joking. Well things keep moving along, even me. Today is a thinking day. A bit of snow flying around with really cold temps coming for this Friday. It will be interesting to see what happens with the greenhouses since all of the plants have gone into spring mode and 6 degrees forecasted for Friday night. Only 2 winter markets left for April then the summer market gets started on May 1st. We are due for a nice summer. Peeps are flying all over the place need to get the new housing built for them and finish a few greenhouse projects up. Seeding stuff like crazy and trying to get ahead with the soup making. Lot's of stuff to do with one week left in March. April will be pretty crazy. Well off to do some book keeping.

Saturday, March 20, 2010

Good Morning!!! Well early "summer" this year is driving me crazy. I have had to come out of my winter lethargy with force instead of easing into the season. Good? Bad? I really have not decided yet. I am really worried that the "hot" weather of the last 2 weeks is now going back to normal cold for the rest of the month and is going to cause problems in the greenhouses. Seems spinach, swiss chard, and sorrel have survived quite well under some remay out in the fields. It will be interesting to see how it grows out. Soup business is going well and picking up alot of new accounts for early spinach and salad. Kate my new farm manager is doing a great job while being thrown into things. The extra help she provides is greatly needed and appreciated. The other Kate (Kate 2) is back up once a week and really helping get the harvesting done. Soup is on the burner for market and man am I getting sick of bagging salad......Ah well. So hope to see all of you at market today, sugar on snow, I have veggie chili and a real nice potato, bean, ham soup. Peeps are doing well and almost ready to move outside. Need to get coops built and other construction projects on the move. bye.

Crop Mobs!! http://greenmountaincropmob.weebly.com/index.html
Cut and paste the link above. I just read about this in southern california, what a great idea! Pass the word to others.

Monday, March 8, 2010

Here you go. Great podcast about winter growing.
http://www.vpr.net/news_detail/87412/

Sunday, March 7, 2010

Whew! two posts in one day.....well the weather is great! Now to get something done and some salad sold. CSA is doing well and according to my record keeping I have just 4 shares left. Placed a huge seed order today for the season. Next thing to do is pick up a few tools and get the irrigation stuff ordered. I must seed tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant this week. It's time....... Temporary greenhouses will be the big push/project this spring. I am going to put one up over the front asparagus, which needs some very tedious and serious weeding done to it. I mulched and weeded last year but.....putting the chickens in there does the best job. So the snow is melting the peeps are feathering out, the crew is coming together for the season. I may even have some soup assistance. What is it Hope springs eternal or is eternal springs hope or hope is eternal spring? bye.......
Hey Gang,
What a difference a week in California makes. What they call a farmer's market and organic out there in Orange County is very interesting to say the least. Survived the Tsunami warning, ate alot of tex-mex and the farm managed to survive without me. Thanks to Kate and my neighbors for making it possible. Especially with the 2 feet of wet heavy snow. Now it's back and working double time. The greenhouses are exploding with greens and spinach. Great weather and everything is moving right along.

Monday, February 22, 2010

Well the long awaited day has arrived! We are off to California for a few days of rest and relaxation. Hoping the weather cooperates...if it doesn't we will make do. Just good to get away for a few days. Going out to see family and have some fun, might even get some culture squeezed in around BBQ'in with my brother in law.
Disturbing news floating around Montpelier right now.....seems NECI is in the process of trying to rent or get into as many kitchen spaces as possible in downtown. Bad for the local restaurant owners, good for NECI. Questionable for the landlords. Instead of independently owned restaurants, each with it's own character we get 4,5,6 NECI managed sites. Having worked for them for many years I do not think this will benefit the local economy. Still need to put some thought into this but it smacks of corporate dining...........
Snow on the way but not that much...still thinking early spring.

Saturday, February 20, 2010

Good Morning, A quick post here. Busy getting K8 trained and up to speed to take care of the farm for a few days. When I get back the season starts....full steam ahead. Market today in Montpelier plenty of Tangletown Beef Barley soup and Caramelized onion and cabbage soup with Butterworks farm's beans. Some really good local stuff. I will have horseradish sour cream for the cabbage soup too. Plenty of spinach and salad as well.
Now onto farm stuff...it's been tough to resist the urge to start seeding flats but I started in Feb last year and it was just a bit too early. Going to seed like crazy the first week of March though. The greens are waking up in the greenhouses and things are looking quite good. IPO the farm's head mouser passed away this winter. Romeo is going to have to step up this year. He's our new 25lb mouser. If your up to the farm you will meet him. He is attention "starved"....
Public radio is supposed to be at the market today getting some sound bites for a program they are doing on winter growing and season extension. They have interviewed a few of us daring naive growers who tempt mother nature during the winter months. Should be a good program. I will keep you posted when I get a date for it. Soup business is going great guns. Going to be an extra busy fellow this year but I also have some help on the farm. I will post again real soon with other goings on. I have to go get ready for market. Joe

Thursday, February 4, 2010

Whoohoo I have another follower! That brings me to 10. Nice to know someones out there reading. I know, I know....a few of you have told me you read the blog just don't follow it yet. I guess not having an obsession is good, or maybe not. Anyhow where the hell has this winter gone? Sure it's February but we only have about 3 inches of snow and I have not gotten any planning done yet, let alone some type of budget. Marketing is all done though. I think that's what I like the most. Greenhouses are looking great and this is the day things start growing again. So I will have plenty of spinach and salad at market this Saturday along with some really tasty soup. Thinking Free Range chicken vegetable and Butterworks Farm Black Bean. Plenty of hot soup to eat with real nice cheese crostinis as usual.
On a sad note our cat IPO was put to sleep this week, 20 years of hard mousing. Good cat who earned her keep. I can hear the vermin rejoicing in the spinach beds already.
Incredibly they are forecasting 6 days of sun. It's going to be cold but the sun and the intensity of it after the 4th of Feb. means the greenhouses really get cranking. Plenty of fresh salad and greens for the next few months.

Soup business is doing well. Volume has slowed a bit but that's ok, boy does it consume allot of my time. Red Hen is getting great feedback on what I am making for them and it's going over real well at market. Intervale Food Hub is offering to there CSA members as well. Allot of potential. Just need to find my own kitchen and maybe stick a few seats out front.

Looking at planning and pretty excited (as always) about the upcoming season. Still need to get seeds and supplies bought but the taxes are done, the college financial aide for my oldest is not.
Well soup and harvesting to be done today so have to go. Hope to see you at the market this Saturday. Oh, one last thing the CSA only has 6 shares left. I am sticking to only 15 full shares again this year. Worked out well for everyone involved and allot of you are coming back this year. A few new faces so far as well. Joe

Thursday, January 28, 2010

Well thought I should start writing something again on a regular basis....snowing like crazy right now and the wind is screamin through here (get it- screamin' ridge farm). So I watched Food Inc the other night. Nothing new for me but an excellant job of putting all the pieces together. The ammoniated hamburger filler was crazy. I posted an NY Times article a while back just on that item. Seems the science is not working out as expected, thus a whole lotta Ecoli in your burgers still.
Trying to get planning done, seeds bought, flats started, etc. AND I am trying to do taxes and college financial aide forms for my oldest daughter. What is impressive is they ask you to go around and count all the change you can find in the cracks of your furniture. Seems they feel that should be reported as useable income for college tuition. Ah well....

Soup business continues to keep me real busy. Having flashbacks to my restaurant days every now and then and not the good ones.

Well off I go.....
http://www.montpelierbridge.com/businessandrealestate.htm

Follow the link. Great article on the Montp. Winter market with the farm getting a very nice mention. Off to make soup.

Friday, January 8, 2010

Hey Gang! Well it's nice to be sitting here with some time do some farming from the neck up instead of just my backside doing all the labor. Snowing gently outside right now and only about a foot of the stuff on the ground so far. So I just updated the website a bit with information for the 2010 CSA. I have lowered the price and will be adding soup, pesto, and marinara to the offerings, as well as continue giving eggs. It will run for 18 weeks starting on May 27th and ending on Sept. 23. I anticipate plenty of asparagus again this year.
I am currently selling to soup to Red Hen Baking Co. So stop by the Exit 9 store to have a great sandwich and some soup. They have a real nice little wine selection going on also.
Farmer's market is next Saturday the 16th of January and then the next one is not until the first Saturday in Feb. I will have plenty of hot soup, crostinis, and salad at market.
Back to the CSA---I will only be offering 15 full shares again.
Thanks
Joe

Saturday, January 2, 2010

Well market today from 10-2pm at the Vermont College gym. This is going to be a tough one to call as far as attendance goes. Everyone may go skiing or are they just sick of spending money after the holidays. Should be interesting. Personally I would be skiing today but I am sure it's still going to be an overcrowded nut house on the hills. Plenty of greens harvested for today and some tasty soups ready to go as well. Last of the winter squash and some cabbbage coming to market also. A bit of Kale in the cooler but I think I will use it up in a soup. If you get by Red Hen bakery in middlesex be sure to try some of my soup. Joe
